This spring, we invite you to four selected Thursday evenings where popular science is combined with fascinating planetarium shows in Wisdome Umeå. Curiosum Space is aimed at a more adult audience and offers space experiences that open new perspectives on the universe and our place within it.

Thursday, 12 Mars – The Northern Lights and Space Weather

This evening, we turn our attention to one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena – the Northern Lights. What actually happens when the sky suddenly begins to shimmer in green, pink and violet?

The evening offers both scientific insight and practical tools: discover how the Northern Lights are created using our planeterella, join a photography workshop with photographer Fredrik Larsson to learn how to capture the aurora, and conclude the evening with a spectacular planetarium show about space weather in Wisdome Umeå.

▷ Free admission all evening!

Programme

5.15 PM Experience our Planeterella
See how the Northern Lights are created in miniature. Using our planeterella, we demonstrate space weather and how the aurora forms through the interaction between solar activity and Earth’s magnetic field. (approx. 30 min)

6 PM Photographing the Northern Lights – with Fredrik Larsson
Photographer Fredrik Larsson shares his best tips on how to find and capture the aurora. The workshop is suitable both for DSLR or mirrorless camera users and for those wanting to succeed with a smartphone. (approx. 60 min)

Content:
- The Northern Lights – key facts
- How to find the aurora – forecasts, locations and timing
- Practical photography tips (smartphone and/or camera)
- Q&A session

7.15 PM Planetarium Show – Space Weather and the Northern Lights
Join us on a visual journey through space and discover how space weather takes shape. Experience the Sun’s activity up close and see how charged particles travel through space, are guided by Earth’s magnetic field and collide with the atmosphere, creating the light phenomenon we call the Northern Lights. (approx. 40 min)

About the Event

Fredrik Larsson is a local photographer with a particular passion for the Northern Lights and Nordic landscapes. His work is recognised for its atmospheric light and technical precision, and he is frequently commissioned for photography assignments and lectures. During the evening, he shares insights from countless hours under the northern Swedish night sky and gives you the tools to succeed yourself.

What Is a Planetarium Show?

A planetarium show is an immersive visual experience where space is projected all around you in our dome-shaped theatre, Wisdome Umeå. Here, you can journey into the universe through scientifically based visualisations and explore everything from planets and moons to stars, nebulae and exoplanets. Through large-scale projection and storytelling, the experience offers new perspectives on space and our place within it.
