This autumn, we invite you to a series of selected Thursday evenings combining popular science talks with fascinating planetarium shows in Wisdome Umeå. Curiosum Space is aimed at an adult audience and offers immersive experiences that invite you to see the universe – and our place in it – from new perspectives.
How does the human body respond to leaving Earth? And what does it take to travel further into space? Hear researcher Carol Norberg talk about how microgravity and radiation affect the human body, and the challenges we need to overcome for future space travel. What will it take for humans to return to the Moon and eventually travel on to Mars? After the lecture, enjoy an immersive planetarium show in Wisdome Umeå exploring humanity’s journey into space.

18:00 Lecture: Humans Are Not Built for Space Travel – So How Do We Survive in Space? (Carol Norberg, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Physics, Umeå University)
The human body has evolved for life on Earth, but humans are also explorers, constantly seeking to discover new environments. Travelling beyond Earth’s atmosphere and into the hazardous environment of space presents many challenges. Microgravity and high levels of radiation affect astronauts’ health and their ability to undertake long-duration space missions. Researchers can send robotic spacecraft to take measurements in space and simulate the space environment here on Earth to learn how to mitigate the challenges of space travel. With our current knowledge, we are entering a new era of human spaceflight, in which humans may soon return to the Moon and, in the longer term, travel on to Mars. (approx. 40 mins)
19:00 Planetarium show in Wisdome: Humanity’s Exploration of Space (approx. 30 mins)
You can reserve your place free of charge via the link below. You may choose to attend the full programme or individual sessions. Tickets must be collected no later than 15 minutes before the start of each session. Unclaimed tickets will be released for drop-in visitors.

Carol Norberg is a space physicist with an interest in human spaceflight and Arctic science. Originally from the UK, she completed her PhD in theoretical physics at the University of Oxford. After spending some time at the European Space Agency’s research and technology centre in the Netherlands, Carol moved to Sweden to become a lecturer in space physics at Umeå University.
She is also the editor of the book Human Spaceflight and Exploration, which focuses on human spaceflight and space exploration. The book was published in 2013, and a second edition will be published later this year.
